President Tsai Ing-wen said Sept. 15 that the Republic of China (Taiwan) will seek to increase business and infrastructure investment in its four Central American diplomatic allies so as to strengthen economic ties and secure mutual benefits.

According to the president, several missions have been organized to explore latent business opportunities in the region, and the country is fully committed to increasing investments there as well as purchasing Central American products. She added that such efforts are expected to facilitate greater collaboration and boost competitiveness.

Tsai made the remarks at a reception celebrating the 196th anniversary of Central American independence in Taipei City. During the occasion, she said that the ROC and its allies have forged strong ties based on the shared values of democracy and freedom.

During her recent visits to the nation’s four diplomatic allies in Central America—El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua—Tsai was able to witness a variety of collaborative efforts. She said such close cooperation serves as evidence of the country’s friendly and stable relations with its overseas partners.

Speaking on some of the initiatives she inspected during the state visits, Tsai pointed to the success of the One Town, One Product Project in Honduras, led by the International Cooperation and Development Fund from 2012-2014, which aimed to promote local business development. She also noted efforts by ROC experts to bolster factories in Nicaragua and restore historical buildings in the ancient Guatemalan city of Antigua.

Tsai conveyed her gratitude to the four Central American allies for their continuous support of the ROC, and said she hopes the ties that bind them grow stronger in the future. (CPY-E)
