A delegation of Taiwan officials and company representatives completed a four-day recruitment tour of Chennai and Mumbai Sept. 7 as part of government efforts to strengthen business ties and talent exchanges with India under the New Southbound Policy.

Organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the delegation comprised representatives from more than 20 Taiwan firms. The group staged events at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Chennai and the K. J. Somaiya Institute of Engineering and Information Technology in Mumbai to interview students for job openings as well as provide attendees with information about Taiwan’s employment environment.

According to the MOEA, some 150 jobs were on offer at the recruitment sessions in such professional fields as computer software, information systems and electromechanical engineering, while participating firms were also seeking out R&D talent. More than 450 students attended the gatherings, highlighting growing interest among Indian graduates in exploring Taiwan’s job market, the ministry said.

To foster educational ties and promote work opportunities in Taiwan, the group also visited SRM University in Chennai as well as two institutions of higher education in Mumbai—Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal’s NMIMS university, formerly Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies.

The delegation organized talks at the three universities to highlight various foreign talent recruitment projects such as Contact Taiwan, a Chinese-English bilingual website launched in June 2016 by the MOEA. This site lists job openings and provides detailed information on such topics as Taiwan’s living environment, taxation regulations and visa applications.

According to the MOEA, measures like Contact Taiwan and international recruitment tours strengthen the nation’s global competitiveness by attracting top-level foreign talent. Since 2003, such government-backed recruitment initiatives have drawn more than 8,000 professionals from around the world to Taiwan, the ministry said. (KWS-E)
