Taiwan’s semiconductor sector receives another boost of growth in 2023 following the decision by U.S.-based Lam Research Corp. to set up an advanced R&D center in the country. (MOFA)
 

Taiwan’s semiconductor industry remained on the fast track in 2023 following continuous efforts by the public and private sectors to enhance research and development, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said Dec. 28 in a press release.

The government has spent nearly NT$6.5 billion (US$211.6 million) in the past five years helping local equipment and materials suppliers strengthen their R&D capabilities. As a result, the total number of products made in Taiwan that are in the global supply chain now stands at 137, the MOEA said.

The ministry’s statement followed the recent announcement by Lam Research Corp., a U.S.-based semiconductor equipment and service provider, to set up an advanced R&D center in Taiwan. Netherlands-based Advanced Semiconductor Materials Lithography and U.S.-based Applied Materials, Inc., the other two heavyweight equipment and materials suppliers, have also established similar facilities in the country.

The MOEA expects the latest development to help promote talent cultivation, create NT$13.3 billion in procurement business for Taiwan firms and spur NT$433.7 billion in investment. It will also help 50 local firms gain access to international R&D activities and the global supply chain ecosystem, thus establishing Taiwan as the semiconductor equipment R&D hub of the world, it added.
