President Tsai Ing-wen said Oct. 15 that Taiwan athletes contesting the recently concluded 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia turned in an outstanding effort and are national heroes.

The courage, determination and grit of the team reflects well on Taiwan and its 23 million people, Tsai said. This achievement is particularly inspiring given the challenges the athletes deal with in daily life and maintaining intensive training regimes, she added.

Tsai made the remarks while receiving team members at the Office of the President in Taipei City. The 140-plus contingent brought home two golds, nine silvers and 14 bronzes in 11 categories at the quadrennial games.

According to Tsai, she was particularly impressed by Taiwan’s ten-pin bowlers and their haul of two golds, two silver and two bronzes. She also praised Lin Tzu-hui, who bounced back from injury during the 2016 Paralympics in Brazil to snatch bronze in the women’s 79-kilogram powerlifting category.

The president said the athletes’ strong showing is in keeping with the best performance in two decades of Team Taiwan at the Asian Games last month.

Medical personnel, physiotherapists and trainers, as well as the Sports Administration under the Ministry of Education and the national paralymipic committee, were also singled out by the president for their invaluable contributions to the team’s success.

Going forward, Tsai said the government will continue providing athletes with enhanced support so they can scale even greater heights for Taiwan. She also directed the SA to organize more recreational and sporting events, especially those for individuals with disabilities.

Held Oct. 6-13 in Jakarta, the third edition of the Asian Para Games saw around 2,900 athletes from 43 nations and territories compete in 506 medal events across 18 sports. (SFC-E)
