Articles and advertisements released earlier this month on the nation’s bid for meaningful participation in the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change spotlighted the many ways Taiwan can help promote sustainable development around the world, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dec. 15.

The publications were issued during the 24th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC running Dec. 3-14 in Katowice, Poland. They included an article Dec. 11 in Sueddeutsche Zeitung, one of Germany’s largest daily newspapers, praising the country as a role model in enacting legislation to tackle climate change.

Citing remarks by Tsai Hung-teh, acting minister of the Cabinet-level Environmental Protection Administration and head of the nation’s delegation to sideline events during COP24, the report noted that Taiwan aims to reduce its carbon emissions to 50 percent of the 2005 level by 2050, among numerous other policy goals.

The previous day, the Polish Press Agency ran an interview with Tsai in which he detailed the government’s roadmap for lowering emissions. Highlighting Taiwan’s strong visibility in Katowice, the article also outlined the country’s achievements in addressing climate issues and willingness to share related experiences.

The message “Combating Climate Change: Taiwan Can Help” was displayed on the Polish city’s tram network to boost awareness of the nation’s commitment to addressing the global challenge, the MOFA said.

A special report titled “A Tale of Two Green Cities: Kaohsiung and Katowice” was also produced by the ministry in cooperation with news magazine The Warsaw Voice. Published in English and Polish, the article outlined Taiwan’s achievements and contributions in areas spanning carbon emissions reduction, energy conservation, environmental protection and green technology.

In early November, the ministry released the short film “A Promise to the Land” on its Trending Taiwan YouTube channel to underline the nation’s merits as a valuable global partner in advancing sustainable development.

Shot on location in Myanmar and subtitled in 10 languages, the video explores Taiwan’s efforts to provide clean energy in remote areas of the Southeast Asian country through a collaborative project implemented by Taipei City-based International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF).
