A multichannel international campaign aimed at giving the 23 million people of Taiwan a voice in the activities, meetings and mechanisms of the U.N. was launched Aug. 23 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
 
“Taiwan: A Vital Global Partner in the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals” urges the world body to take immediate action to resolve the inappropriate exclusion of Taiwan from the U.N. system; rectify its discriminatory policy against the country’s passport holders and journalists in violation of their human rights; and ensure Taiwan can participate in an equal and dignified manner in contributing to and implementing the U.N. sustainable Development Goals.
 
According to the MOFA, a number of the country’s diplomatic allies will present a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling on him to address Taiwan’s exclusion from the world body on the basis of fairness, justice and inclusiveness, as well as its pledge to serve all peoples around the world. They will also voice support for Taiwan during the general debate of the 74th session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
 
Other important initiatives include the op-ed “Building an Inclusive U.N. with Taiwan Onboard” by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and a short film detailing Taiwan’s contributions to advancing sustainable development in diplomatic allies and partner nations.
 
In addition, a series of events spotlighting Taiwan’s many cooperative achievements will be staged on the sidelines of the UNGA. These span key areas such as climate change, SDGs, universal health coverage and youth empowerment. (EH-E)
