Tsai vows to strengthen Taiwan-Honduras ties

President Tsai Ing-wen said April 9 Taiwan will continue to strengthen ties with Honduras, underscoring the government’s commitment to working alongside its Central American ally in improving the well-being of citizens in both countries while making positive contributions to the international community.

Honduras is a staunch and supportive friend of Taiwan, Tsai said. President Juan Orlando Hernandez and the Honduran government have spoken in support of Taiwan at numerous international events, and the two countries have taken turns to offer support and assistance to each other in times of need, she added.

Tsai made the remarks via video during a speech delivered from the Presidential Office in Taipei City to mark the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties with Honduras.

According to Tsai, the two countries are important economic partners, and bilateral trade has consistently recorded year-on-year growth. Many Honduran products such as cocoa and coffee are popular among Taiwan consumers, she added.

Tsai also took the opportunity to restate the government’s commitment to supporting Honduras in post-hurricane reconstruction efforts, adding she hopes to foster greater people-to-people exchanges between the two sides going forward. (DL-E)
