President Tsai Ing-wen is winner of the 2020 John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service announced May 4 by Washington-headquartered Halifax International Security Forum.

Tsai is honored to receive the award and believes it belongs equally to the people of Taiwan, the Presidential Office said. This recognition spotlights the success of the government in safeguarding the country’s freedom and democracy, as well as efforts to bolster the global response to COVID-19, the PO added.

According to the Presidential Office, the award also demonstrates Taiwan is a force for good, willing and able to play a bigger role in the international community. Taiwan will continue working with like-minded partners in advancing peace, stability and inclusive prosperity across the Indo-Pacific and around the world, the PO said.

Late U.S. Sen. John McCain is celebrated as a champion of freedom, democracy and human rights. A strong supporter of Taiwan, he consistently backed legislation and measures promoting equality, opportunity and shared values throughout his time in office, according to the Presidential Office.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said “We’re enormously proud of @iingwen for winning the John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service. Recognition of her efforts to #DefendDemocracy & human rights, combat #COVID19 & safeguard the country’s sovereignty is a celebration of #Taiwan & its freedom-loving people.”

The forum, founded in 2009 as part of think tank the German Marshall Fund of the United States, is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization devoted to bolstering strategic cooperation among democracies. (DL-E)
