Taiwan is sending the largest delegation to this year’s SelectUSA Investment Summit June 20-22 in Washington, ensuring the country enjoys full access to the array of U.S. economic opportunities on offer at the event, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Led by Minister without Portfolio Deng Chen-chung, the MOEA-organized delegation comprises 120 representatives from 60 enterprises in sectors such as aerospace, biotechnology, information and communication technology, machinery, petrochemicals and solar energy. Attendees include industry heavyweights Aerospace Industrial Development Corp. based in central Taiwan’s Taichung City, as well as China Steel Corp. and CPC Corp., Taiwan, headquartered in southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City.

According to Lee Guann-jyh, deputy director-general of the Bureau of Foreign Trade under the MOEA, participation in the event will foster in-depth exchanges on emerging industry trends as well as deepen the economic partnership between the two sides. Taiwan is committed to strengthening its robust trade relationship with the U.S. across a broad spectrum of areas such as commercial space technology, energy and infrastructure, he said.

The American Institute in Taiwan expressed gratitude for the strong interest in the summit shown by the local business community, adding that Taiwan enterprises operating in the U.S. support nearly 13,100 jobs, invest almost US$106 million annually in innovative R&D, and contribute some US$810 million in U.S. goods exports.

Taiwan and the U.S. enjoy strong economic ties, with high levels of supply chain integration boosting the competitiveness of key industries on both sides. According to the BOFT, the U.S. is Taiwan’s second largest trading partner, with bilateral trade volume rising 8 percent year on year to US$67.2 billion in 2017.

Launched in 2013 by the U.S. Department of Commerce, SelectUSA is the highest-profile event dedicated to promoting foreign direct investment in the U.S. (KWS-E)
