President Tsai Ing-wen said May 23 that wind power development in Taiwan is driving growth of related sectors while promoting industrial upgrades and transformation.
 
Wind power is sailing ahead at a rate of knots following commencement of work on the country’s first offshore generation facility earlier this month off the coast of Miaoli County in northern Taiwan, Tsai said.

The landmark facility is a major plank in the government’s electricity transformation policy, Tsai said, adding that it will help achieve energy independence while positioning Taiwan as a major player in the global green power market.
 
Tsai made the remarks while inspecting wind turbine components for the Miaoli facility at Taichung Harbor in central Taiwan.
 
According to Tsai, under the recently amended renewable power legislation, green energy will account for 20 percent of Taiwan’s total electricity mix by 2025.

With a planned installed capacity of 120 megawatts, the Miaoli wind farm will represent an important step toward this goal after it begins commercial operations by year-end, Tsai said.

The facility—along with others in the pipeline—is expected to fast-track establishment of a complete local supply chain comprising key elements like component manufacturing, R&D and undersea foundation installation, Tsai added.

Once total installed capacity reaches policy projections of 5.7 gigawatts by 2025, Tsai said, Taiwan’s wind power-related industries are forecast to attract investment topping NT$1 trillion (US$31.7 billion) while generating NT$1.2 trillion in output and creating 20,000 quality jobs. (SFC-E)
