An Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation dialogue on strengthening regional automotive sector exchanges and linkages kicked off Dec. 4 in Taipei City, the first time Taiwan has hosted the event in its 20-year existence.
 
Co-organized by the Ministries of Economic Affairs and Transportation and Communications, the biannual dialogue involves more than 100 officials and industry representatives from 13 APEC member economies such as Canada, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Russia and the U.S.
 
During the event’s two-day run, participants will address key issues like market trends and vehicle regulations and standards, as well as draft policy recommendations and fast-track finalization of the proposed APEC Autonomous Vehicle Principles and Guidelines.
 
Another highlight of the dialogue is a visit to Taiwan CAR Lab in Tainan City, southern Taiwan. Activities include briefings on the country’s related services and technological innovations, and test rides of homegrown AVs.
 
The event is one of few regular APEC gatherings focusing on fostering direct communication between the public and private sectors on automotive matters, the MOEA said, adding that it also underscores the commitment of the government to safeguarding the long-term health of the sector.
 
Since joining APEC in 1991, Taiwan has made substantial contributions to the regional economic forum. These span a broad spectrum of areas such as disaster prevention, food security, small and medium enterprise development and women’s empowerment. (SFC-E)
