President Tsai Ing-wen said Sept. 24 that the government will spare no efforts to accelerate development of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, spotlighting the sector’s importance to the global economy.

Semiconductors are a major component in the government’s Six Core Strategic Industries unveiled during her 2020 inauguration speech, making them a top priority for the country’s overall development going forward, Tsai said.

Aimed at transforming Taiwan into a dynamic force in the global economy, the Six Core Strategic Industries comprise information and digital technology, cybersecurity, biotech and medical technology, national defense, green and renewable energy, and strategic stockpile industries.

A raft of measures is being implemented to address the needs of those involved in the semiconductor industry, including talent cultivation programs and development of a robust industrial base, Tsai said, adding these will cement Taiwan’s leading market position.

The president made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of executives and experts from Taiwan’s leading semiconductor businesses and industry associations at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

According to Tsai, Taiwan’s semiconductor industry lies at the heart of global supply chains, and the government is leveraging this advantage to build the country into an advanced manufacturing hub. Measures in this regard include bolstering domestic development of critical equipment, materials and technologies, as well as hosting additional training programs at tertiary institutions, she said.

Statistics from U.S.-based industry association Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International reveal Taiwan’s semiconductor output is expected to top NT$3 trillion (US$102.32 billion) this year, second in the world behind only the U.S. It is also the world’s leading materials market and third largest equipment market.
