On 11 and 12 November 2018, Representative Francis Kuo-Hsin Liang and Deputy Representative Steven Tai attended the lecture and memorial service organized by the United Chinese Library to commemorate the 153rd birth anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, founding father of the Republic of China.
On 12 November 2018, over 50 persons, including the office bearers of the United Chinese Library, the Taipei Business Association in Singapore and the International Chinese Culture Exchange Federation, and officials from the Taipei Representative Office in Singapore joined in a solemn ceremony to pay their respects to Dr. Sun.
In his address, Representative Liang stated that Dr. Sun Yat Sen, founder of Singapore’s United Chinese Library, was not only a democratic revolutionary of modern China but also the first provisional president of the Republic of China. Under his leadership, Asia’s first democratic republic – the Republic of China – was born. Dr. Sun promoted China’s modernization and his legacy is etched in the hearts and minds of the Chinese people, including those in Southeast Asia. In the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s words, Dr. Sun was “the great man who changed China’s destiny”. Representative Liang also called for the United Chinese Library to continue and perpetuate Dr Sun’s legacy by supporting his ideal for a free and democratic Republic of China.
Additionally, on 11 November 2018, a lecture entitled “Teo Eng Hock and the United Chinese Library” was conducted by the United Chinese Library and the Raoping Association to highlight the contributions of Mr. Teo Eng Hock and the Chinese community in Singapore to Dr. Sun’s 1911 Revolution as well as to the establishment of schools, clan associations and the building of Singapore.
