Taiwan APEC Representative Morris Chang emphasises country’s digital expertise at annual summit

From 12-18 November, founder of Taiwan’s leading contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) Dr Morris Chang attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting as President Tsai Ing-wen’s appointed representative. In his remarks at the annual meeting, the Taiwan APEC representative focused on the challenges and opportunities presented by the rise of “digital economy”. Dr Chang highlighted Taiwan’s digital expertise and the need to boost regional technological collaboration. He said although Taiwan has a medium-sized economy, it is an integral and inevitable link in the supply chain. The Taiwan envoy also emphasised that Taiwan stands ready and willing to work with regional partners in addressing challenges that are the result of rapid technological development, from the widening wealth gap and unemployment to inadequate protections for individual privacy and intellectual property rights.
During the APEC summit, Dr Chang also met with leaders such as US Vice President Mike Pence, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to exchange views.
