Only peace talks can resolve Cross-Strait matters: Indian scholar

Sumit Kumar, Research Fellow at Maulana Azad Institute of Asian Studies, Kolkata, called the “Middle Kingdom” (meaning “China” in Mandarin) to recognize that any provocative statement will make the Taiwanese people more resilient against it, and only peace talks can resolve matters across the Taiwan Strait in his article “China’s war against Taiwan” published in The Pioneer on Jan. 28, 2019.
Mr. Kumar’s comments came after People’s Republic of China President Xi Jinping’s remarks made in Beijing early this month saying that China would not renounce the idea of using force to re-unify Taiwan. Xi also proposed to Taiwan that the island will have a bright future under a “One Country, Two Systems” framework with China.
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen had prompted rejected Xi’s proposal same day with “the four musts”˗ China must face the reality of the existence of the Republic of China (Taiwan); China must respect the commitment of the 23 million people of Taiwan to freedom and democracy; China must handle cross-strait differences peacefully, on the basis of equality; and it must be the Government or Government-authorised agencies that should engage in the negotiations.
