On 12 November 2019, Representative Francis Kuo-Hsin Liang and Deputy Representative Steven Tai attended the memorial service organized by the United Chinese Library to commemorate the 154th birth anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, founding father of the Republic of China. Over 50 persons, including the office bearers of the United Chinese Library, the Overseas Community Affairs Council and the Alumni of Taiwan Universities & Colleges, and officials from the Taipei Representative Office in Singapore joined in a solemn ceremony to pay their respects to Dr. Sun.
In his address, Representative Liang stated that Dr. Sun Yat Sen was not only a democratic revolutionary of modern China but also the founding father of Asia’s first democratic republic – the Republic of China. Representative Liang spoke of Dr. Sun’s “Three Principles of the People” which ties together the principle of the people's livelihood with the principles of nationalism and democracy, and of Dr. Sun’s “Five Power Constitution”, which established a centralized republic with five branches of government, unlike the three traditional branches (executive, legislative, and judicial) of Western Constitutions. Today, Dr. Sun’s ideals — freedom, democracy and rule of law — have been fully realized in Taiwan. Moreover, Dr. Sun’s legacy and spirit continue to inspire the Chinese people the world over. In the words of Singapore’s late founding Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, Dr. Sun was “the great man who changed China’s destiny”.
Additionally, Representative Liang won the cheers of those present when he called for the United Chinese Library to continue and perpetuate Dr. Sun’s legacy by supporting the latter’s ideal for a free and democratic Republic of China.
