Shekhar Sinha, India’s former Commander in Chief, Western Naval Command and Chief of Integrated Defense Staff, said in his article “Act East and new Southbound Policy complement each other” published on The Sunday Guardian on Dec. 8, 2019 that the bilateral trade between Taiwan and India has crossed approximately US$7 billion and “future opportunity is right for Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy to complement India’s Act East Policy” in this transitional period of uncertainty of trade.
He further called on the two trading partners to move at a rapid pace to ensure “safe and secure passage and arrival of public goods” destined for each other’s ports in accordance with International Maritime Organization regulations, given the increasing volume of trade and non-traditional security challenges in South China Sea, Singapore and Malacca Straits.
