CCAS: Taiwan Prez election results make Xi’s ‘China Dream' a distant prospect

Jayadeva Ranade, President of Centre for China Analysis and Strategy (CCAS) in India, said in his article “Bulldozing Taiwan” published by The Tribune on Feb. 7 that the results in Taiwan’s Presidential election last month will make Xi Jinping’s “China Dream” possibly become a distant prospect.
Mr. Ranade said Beijing will now have to review the Democratic Progressive Party as one with sizeable following that contests China’s “one country, two systems” policy. Beijing would need to accept that “Taiwan identity” and nationalism are both important considerations for the Taiwan people.
He noted that, to reduce Taiwan’s dependence on China, President Tsai Ing-wen will again energize the New Southbound Policy, which presents India with an opportunity to consider initiating economic and commercial contacts with Taiwan. This would result in foreign investments in sectors that will upgrade Indian industry and job creation, according to Mr. Ranade.
