The Times of India, India’s largest English daily, reported in an article on March 15 that while the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is spreading across Europe and the United States, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong are the examples for other democracies to bring the infection under control without severely curtailing personal freedom.
According to the article, as of March 14, Taiwan reported 53 cases and one death; Hong Kong 140 cases and 4 deaths; Singapore had 200 cases and no casualty. It particularly noted that just over half of Taiwan’s cases came from local transmissions, which is a much lower figure than many other affected countries and also illustrates the success of Taiwan’s containment measures.
