On August 8, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced two new confirmed imported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. The two cases are an over 60-year-old male (Case #478) and an over 60-year-old female (Case #479). They are a couple.

Cases #478 and #479 both worked in the Philippines for several months (their most recent departure dates from Taiwan were in February and March, respectively). The male case developed a fever, a runny nose, and fatigue on July 23. The female case experienced an itchy throat and cough on August 3. Their symptoms were relieved after taking medications, but they didn’t seek medical attention in the Philippines. The couple returned to Taiwan on August 6. Both cases voluntarily reported their suspected symptoms to airport quarantine officers when entering Taiwan. After they had their specimens collected at the airport, the couple were taken to a group quarantine facility. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the two cases on August 8

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 83,117 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 82,037. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 479 cases. Of 479 confirmed cases in Taiwan, 387 are imported; 55 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship, and 1 case has yet to be determined.
