CECC confirms 2 more COVID-19 cases; two men found to have COVID-19 after returning to Taiwan from Indonesia and Myanmar

On September 21, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced two new confirmed imported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. The two new cases are an over 20-year-old male (Case #508) and an over 30-year-old male (Case #509). They are all Taiwanese nationals. Those two cases returned to Taiwan from Indonesia and Myanmar, respectively.

Case #508 traveled to Indonesia for work in June. The case developed a fever and an abnormal sense of smell on September 17. The case didn't seek medical attention in Indonesia. He experienced a fever when entering Taiwan on September 19 and voluntarily notified airport quarantine officers of his symptoms. After quarantine officers collected his specimen, he was hospitalized in isolation. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on September 21.

Case #509 visited Myanmar for business in April of 2019. The case showed no symptoms when entering Taiwan on September 17. He underwent quarantine at a quarantine hotel after entry. Because he took the flight back to Taiwan as Case #505 and was seated one row in front of Case #505, he was identified as a contact subjected to home isolation. The case developed a cough on September 17. He experienced a fever and an abnormal sense of taste on September 18, and thus, he notified the health authority of his symptoms. The health authority arranged his medical care and COVID-19 testing. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on September 21. The case is currently hospitalized in isolation.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 91,652 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 90,550. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 509 cases. Of the 509 confirmed cases, 417 are imported; 55 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; and 1 case has unknown sources of infection. Of the confirmed cases, there have been 7 deaths, and 479 patients have been released from isolation, with the other 23 patients remaining hospitalized in isolation.
