The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office invites New Zealand citizens to apply for the 2021 Huayu Enrichment Scholarships, offered by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of Republic of China (Taiwan).
These scholarships provide New Zealand students with the opportunity to study Mandarin in Taiwan, increase their understanding of its culture and society, and promote mutual understanding and interaction between Taiwan and New Zealand.
Scholarship recipients will receive a monthly stipend of NT$25,000 (about NZ$1,200) during their study in Taiwan.
Applicants may choose to study for a period of three, six, nine, 12 months; or summer school (June – July or July – August). However, the length of the scholarship awarded is subject to the Ministry’s discretion.
Study must commence and end between 1 September 2021 and 31 August 2022 (except summer school). Scholarships cannot be extended or deferred.
Study is also subject to COVID-19 border restrictions.
Qualified applicants must:
- be a New Zealand citizen aged 18 years or older,
- have completed University Entrance (NCEA Level 3 or higher) or an equivalent qualification with excellent results,
- be in good health and of good moral character (short-listed candidates are required to complete a health check before the scholarship can be awarded.).

Applicants who meet any of the following conditions are ineligible to apply:
- O.C (Taiwan) nationals or overseas Chinese;
- Students who are currently enrolled at a Mandarin language centre, university or college in Taiwan;
- Past recipients of the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship or Taiwan Scholarship;
- Exchange students who are currently studying in Taiwan, or will be studying in Taiwan during the scholarship period;
- Those who are currently receiving financial benefits from the government or another educational institution in Taiwan.

How to apply?
Please submit the following documents to Scholarships, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, PO Box 11-886, Manners Street, Wellington 6142, New Zealand.
- Application form, completed and signed by the applicant.
- A verified copy of the applicant’s New Zealand passport. Students with multiple citizenships must also include verified copies of other passports or citizenship certificates.
- A verified copy of the highest degree completed and academic transcripts.
- Evidence of applications made to Mandarin language centres in Taiwan.
- Two letters of recommendation signed and posted in sealed envelopes by the applicant’s principals, professors or supervisors.
- A duly signed copy of the Scholarship Agreement.
*All documents will need to be authenticated by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office before the scholarship can be awarded.
Application documents must arrive at our office no later than 31 March 2021.
