On January 16, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 15,632 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Of the 15,632 new cases, 15,409 are domestic and 223 are imported. The CECC announced 40 deaths today.

Regarding the 15,409 new domestic cases, 7,318 are male and 8,076 are female, while the gender of the other 15 cases is under investigation. They range in age from under five to above 90 years. Of those domestic cases, 3,163 were reported in New Taipei City, 1,987 in Taichung City, 1,878 in Taoyuan City, 1,724 in Kaohsiung City, 1,575 in Taipei City, 1,231 in Tainan City, 625 in Changhua County, 544 in Hsinchu County, 406 in Hsinchu City, 371 in Miaoli County, 325 in Pingtung County, 280 in Yunlin County, 254 in Nantou County, 241 in Keelung City, 198 in Yilan County, 184 in Chiayi County, 132 in Hualien County, 119 in Chiayi City, 71 in Taitung County, 54 in Kinmen County, 38 in Penghu County, and nine in Lienchiang County.

Regarding the 40 deaths from domestic cases announced today, they were 21 men and 19 women ranging in age from 50 to above 90 years. They were severe cases.

Regarding the 223 imported cases, they all arrived in Taiwan between December 16, 2022, and January 15, 2023.

The CECC reported that a total of 21,255,742 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 12,027,485. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 9,225,106 cases. Of the 9,225,106 confirmed cases, 45,303 are imported; 9,179,749 are domestic; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 3 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has an unknown source of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated. There have been a cumulative total of 15,873 COVID-19 deaths since 2020; of the 15,873 deaths, 15,853 are from domestic cases and the other 20 are from imported cases.
