The Taiwan Film Festival in Brisbane (TFFIB) will be screening four Taiwanese films on Oct. 28, including the notable “DEMIGOD: the Legend Begins (素還真),” showcasing Taiwan’s unique culture on the international stage.
Initiated in 2016, TFFIB highlights Taiwanese documentaries and films that revolve around issues like culture, gender, and environment. Since then, it has become a celebrated event that connects Taiwanese communities in Australia and serves as a platform to share stories from Taiwan.
TFFIB 2023 will take place in Hoyts Cinemas Sunnybank Plaza, screening two documentaries, “Remember Me (金門留念)” and “A Letter to A’ma (給阿媽的一封信)”; and two feature films, “DEMIGOD: the Legend Begins” and “Gaga (哈勇家).”
You Kai-rung (尤凱蓉), the executive director of TFFIB 2023, said that the inclusion of the two documentaries is a way to continue the founders’ spirit, even though they are not the audience’s first choices. Nevertheless, she believes that there are still many exciting documentaries in Taiwan to be discovered.
As a fan of Pili glove puppetry (霹靂布袋戲), You also looks forward to sharing “DEMIGOD: the Legend Begins” with the audience this year. She mentioned that TFFIB was the first to introduce glove puppetry films to Australia by screening “The Legend of Sacred Stone (聖石傳說)” last year, which was well-received.
TFFIB 2023 is presented by the World Art and Multi-Culture Inc (WAMCI). Melody Chen (陳秋燕), the founding president of WAMCI, said that they managed to overcome various challenges in funding, manpower, and technical matters to organize this meaningful event. Marking its 7th iteration, TFFIB is supported by the Overseas Community Affairs Council, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brisbane, Brisbane City Council, and local enterprises.
