A higher education delegation from India, led by Dr. Gundurao Sitharam Thallak, Chairman of the All India Council of Technical Education, visited Taiwan in early September, to strengthen educational ties with universities in Taiwan. The other ten members of the delegation comprised five vice-chancellors and five professors from five universities in India. The key purpose of their visit was to promote collaboration between their individual universities and universities in Taiwan in the field of semiconductors to train professionals for the Indian government’s India Semiconductor Mission.
The delegation visited the Nano-Electro-Mechanical-Systems Research Center at National Taiwan University; the Radio-Frequency Integrated Circuits Laboratory at Nantou; the Modern Materials Manufacture Laboratory and the Precision Analysis and Material Research Center at National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech); iFIRST, the education branch of Taipei Tech’s newly established Frontier Institute of Research for Science and Technology (FIRST); a clean room & semiconductor fabrication lab at National Tsing Hua University; a smart manufacturing laboratory at Minghsin University of Science and Technology; a chip manufacturing and testing lab, and the Creative Thinking and Intelligent Maker Space at Cheng Shiu University; the Center of Crystal Research at National Sun Yat-sen University; and Lunghwa University of Science and Technology.
As well as seeing the facilities and laboratories at these universities firsthand, members of the visiting delegation signed MOUs between their individual universities and some of these universities. The MOUs will provide a formal basis for ongoing interaction, including setting up student and faculty exchange programs, and possible joint degree programs. Training people for the semiconductor field requires industry-academia cooperation, and the delegation also visited many companies to gain deeper insights into Taiwan’s strengths and ongoing developments regarding technology.
Dr. Mon-chi Lio, Political Deputy Minister of Education and Dr. Nicole Lee, Director General of the Department of International and Cross-strait Education, received the delegation and congratulated all the vice chancellors on having signed MOUs between their universities and various universities in Taiwan. The members of the delegation from India are looking forward to ongoing bilateral educational exchanges with Taiwan.
