Thailand Biennale 2023 features Taiwanese artists

The Thailand Biennale 2023 kicked off in Chiang Rai on Dec. 9. This year’s theme is “Open World.” Among 60 artists from around the globe, three Taiwanese artists – Wang Wen-chih (王文志), Michael Lin (林明弘), and Hsu Chia-wei (許家維) – were invited to showcase their artworks.

Echoing the theme of the exhibition, Wang Wen-chih built a large-scale bamboo installation titled “Zero (方外之境),” inviting visitors to explore their inner worlds by entering this structure. It is placed at the entrance of the Chiang Rai International Art Museum.

Employing patterns and colors from Northern Thai’s clothing, Michael Lin’s “Weekend (週末)” decorates the outer wall of the Chiang Rai Old Provincial Hall. It delves into the role of contemporary art in the Chiang Rai province, a region known for its cultural diversity.

Hsu Chia-Wei displays three video art pieces in the Golden Triangle Park, including his newest production “The Actor from Golden Triangle (一位來自金三角的演員),” telling the history of the Golden Triangle and leading the audience to experience the juncture of geopolitics in the digital age.

The Thailand Biennale opens now until Apr. 30, 2024.
