The recent expression of condolences and offer of assistance extended by mainland China in the wake of the magnitude 6 temblor centered on Hualien County in eastern Taiwan are sincerely appreciated by the Republic of China (Taiwan) government, according to the Mainland Affairs Council Feb. 12.

After consultations with the Central Emergency Operation Center, it is determined that “Taiwan has sufficient professional manpower and equipment for disaster relief work,” the MAC said.

It is important for the people of Taiwan to have faith in the face of this adversity, the MAC said, adding that as long as the people work together and contribute fully to relief efforts in coordination with the government, Taiwan is certain to overcome all difficulties.

The earthquake caused severe damage after it struck at 11:50 p.m., Feb. 6, off the coast of Hualien. Current CEOC statistics confirm 16 dead, one missing and 291 injured.

Nine of the dead and six of the injured are mainland Chinese independent travelers. All of the latter were admitted to Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital, with five released and one still receiving treatment.

The MAC said it is keeping a close eye on the situation and will continue working with Hualien County Government, Taipei City-headquartered Straits Exchange Foundation and the National Immigration Agency under the Ministry of the Interior to ensure affected mainland Chinese receive full assistance and support.
