A total of 33 high school students from Taichung are set to visit the central Taiwan metropolis’s sister cities in the U.S. during July as part of a local government initiative aimed at cultivating international youth exchanges and promoting the upcoming Taichung World Flora Exposition.

Two groups are scheduled to visit San Diego, California, July 8-23 and Tacoma, Washington, July 15-30, respectively, to attend English-language classes and tour major attractions and universities. They will also spotlight the expo by staging presentations at schools and meeting with local officials.

According to Taichung Deputy Mayor Lin Yi-ying, the annual exchange program, now in its ninth year, underscores the city government’s commitment to broadening students’ horizons. The 2018 edition holds special significance given participants’ additional mission to foster awareness of the flora exposition, she said, adding that these talented youths can play an important role in highlighting Taichung’s environmental credentials and the innovative green technology exhibits planned for the event.

Lee Pei-chi from Taichung Municipal Girls’ Senior High School said the exchange program offers her and fellow participants an invaluable opportunity to explore U.S. society and culture. The students are eagerly looking forward to sharing knowledge of the Taichung World Flora Exposition with their American counterparts and helping make one of the largest events ever staged in their hometown a great success, she added.

Running Nov. 3 to April 24, 2019, the expo is themed The Sound of Blooming and will feature an array of native fruits and flowers, as well as showcase emerging environmental concepts and solutions. It is scheduled to take place at Fengyuan Huludun Park, Houli Horse Ranch and Forest Park Area and Waipu Park Area. (CPY-E)
