The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses gratitude on behalf of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to US National Security Council Spokesman Garrett Marquis for his January 5 comments on Twitter, which reiterated support for Taiwan and rejected Chinese threats against it.

Mr. Marquis stated in his tweets that “the US rejects the threat or use of force to compel the people of Taiwan. Any resolution of Cross-Strait differences must be peaceful and based on the will of the ppl on both sides.” He also urged Beijing to “stop its coercion & resume dialog w/ the democratically-elected administration on Taiwan.”

Taiwan welcomes and appreciates the strong and comprehensive support from the US administration and Congress, which has been underscored in recent days by Twitter messages from numerous Members of the Senate and House of Representatives. Taiwan is committed to working with the US to safeguard shared democratic values and deepen the cordial bilateral cooperation and partnership in all domains. (E)
