The Ministry of Foreign Affairs thanked the European Parliament Jan. 16 for the passage of resolutions reaffirming support for Taiwan.
 
Passed the previous day in Strasbourg, the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Common Security and Defence Policy include articles reiterating support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the activities, mechanisms and meetings of international organizations, as well as urging peaceful resolution of cross-strait differences and preservation of the status quo.
 
The resolutions also express concern that interference in elections by foreign autocratic regimes through the use of disinformation and cyber-attacks could threaten regional stability.
 
Several members of the EP also spoke in support of Taiwan during the passage of the resolutions. MEP Michael Gahler, chairman of the EP-Taiwan Friendship Group, said the country’s presidential and legislative elections held earlier this month are testament to Taiwan’s vibrant democracy, while MEP Michaela Sojdrova urged the EU to deepen bilateral ties between the two sides.
 
According to the MOFA, the resolutions reflect the importance the EU attaches to democracy and security in Asia. The organization’s firm and long-standing friendship is sincerely appreciated by Taiwan’s people, the ministry added.
 
The government will continue working with Taiwan’s like-minded partners to safeguard shared values of freedom and democracy while promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, the MOFA said. (YCH-E)
