2021-02-17

Taiwan drama “A Sun” is shortlisted for an Oscar in the category of Best International Feature Film at the 93rd edition of the annual artistic award presented by the U.S.-headquartered Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Directed by Chung Mong-hong, the Golden Horse-winning offering for best film, director, leading actor, supporting actor and editing is one of 15 titles selected from 93 entries. Its vivid portrayal of emotive parent-multisibling relations is tipped to continue a run of critical success at events such as 2020’s Asian Film Awards and Houston Film Critics Society Awards, as well as 2019’s Busan, Toronto and Tokyo International Film Festivals.

Minister of Culture Lee Yung-te, who welcomed the movie’s shortlisting by AMPAS, offered his congratulations to cast and crew, and extended his best wishes for a nomination and victory at the awards ceremony. The former is announced March 15, while the latter is taking place April 25 in Los Angeles.

According to the Ministry of Culture, respected industry publications The Hollywood Reporter and Variety list “A Sun” as an Oscar dark horse and one of the best films of 2020, respectively. There is a groundswell of anticipation in Taiwan over the film’s chances of earning the ultimate accolade, the MOC said.

The Golden Horse Awards are widely considered the most prestigious in the world of Chinese language cinema. Since establishment in 1962, they consistently attract top-flight submissions from home and abroad. (DL-E)
