The use of lethal force against protesters in Myanmar by security forces was condemned Feb. 28 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Violence will not help resolve political unrest in the Southeast Asian country, the MOFA said. The military junta is called on to exercise self-restraint, listen to the people and bring an end to the turmoil in a peaceful manner, the ministry added.

The MOFA also conveyed its sincere condolences to the families and friends of those killed during the protests, describing the sacrifices in the name of freedom and democracy as warranting the highest respect.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Taiwan joins other democratic countries around the world in condemning the use of lethal force against protesters in Myanmar. All parties are urged to engage in dialogue, resolve political disputes peacefully, & work toward the restoration of democracy & a return to normal life.”

The MOFA said it is cooperating closely with officials from the country’s representative office in Myanmar in ensuring the safety of ROC (Taiwan) nationals and keeping a close eye on the unfolding situation.

According to the MOFA, pro-democracy demonstrations have been taking place in the capital Yangon and second largest city Mandalay since the declaration Feb.1 of a state of emergency by the military. The response Feb. 28 by security forces resulted in multiple deaths and injuries. (SFC-E)
