President Tsai touts strength of Taiwan-Belize relations

President Tsai Ing-wen said April 23 that Taiwan-Belize ties are going from strength to strength and she looks forward to further enhancing this close partnership.

Taiwan and Belize will celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations in October, Tsai said, adding that she had the chance to experience the friendship and support for Taiwan in the Central American ally during her state visit last August.

According to Tsai, the two sides are working to expand cooperation in fields spanning business, education, information and communication technology, infrastructure and public health. This is demonstrated by a planned Taiwan tourism investment mission to Belize and the first Taiwan trade fair in the country set for November, she said.

Tsai made the remarks while receiving a four-member delegation led by Belize Senate President Lee Mark Chang at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

Also including Minister of Natural Resources Hugo Patt, Sen. Aldo Salazar and Michael Singh, adviser to Prime Minister Dean Barrow on e-governance and digital transformation, the delegation is in country on a five-day agricultural, biotechnology and economic fact-finding trip.

During the visit, Chang and Legislator Tsai Shih-ying will preside over the inauguration of the Taiwan-Belize Interparliamentary Amity Association. This body represents a new chapter in parliamentary diplomacy between the two sides, Tsai said.

The president also took the opportunity to express gratitude to Chang and Laura Tucker-Longsworth, speaker of the Belize House of Representatives, for their joint letter in February voicing support for the government’s stance in safeguarding Taiwan’s sovereignty and democracy. (CPY-E)
