An Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum on how industry-academia collaboration can strengthen talent development wrapped up Sept. 18 in Taipei City, spotlighting government efforts to boost exchanges among member economies.

Organized by the Ministry of Education under the heading “Regional Industry-Academia Collaboration for Talent Development: An Exchange of Skills Training, Internships and Jobs,” the three-day event comprised speeches, panel discussions and fact-finding visits. Attendees included officials and experts from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

According to the MOE, the forum sought to narrow the skills gap in the digital economy era and highlight the challenges faced by women in the workplace. Taiwan’s extensive experience in vocational education spanning areas such as long-term care, food technology and electrical engineering means that the country is ideally equipped to lead in developing regional talent, the ministry added.

Speakers at the forum included Park Dong Sun, lead shepherd of the APEC Human Resources Development Working Group, and Han Pi-chi, associate professor at the Department of Education in southern Taiwan’s National Kaohsiung Normal University.

Other activities included visits to National Taipei University of Technology, National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences, and National Pingtung University of Science and Technology in southern Taiwan, as well as a stop at Taipei-headquartered Delta Electronics Inc.

Since joining APEC in 1991, Taiwan has made substantial contributions to the regional economic forum. These span a broad spectrum of areas such as disaster prevention, food security, small and medium enterprise development and women’s empowerment. (YCH-E)
