Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu departed Jan. 20 for a two-day trip to the country’s Pacific ally Palau, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
 
Wu’s schedule for the day includes meeting with outgoing Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr. in his capacity as President Tsai Ing-wen’s special envoy and hosting a dinner banquet for Remengesau, President-elect Surangel Whipps Jr. and other key political figures.
 
The minister is set to attend the Jan. 21 inauguration of Whipps and Vice President-elect J. Uduch Sengebau Senior before holding discussions with the pair as well as Senate President Hokkons Baules and Speaker of the House of Delegates Sabino Anastacio.
 
Wu will also travel to Ngaraard later in the day to attend the opening ceremony of a community center sponsored by Taiwan, according to the MOFA.
 
A delegation comprising members of Taiwan’s tourism industry is also visiting Palau with Wu in response to the travel bubble proposed by Whipps, the MOFA said. The group will tour the Rock Islands to study the possibility of bilateral travel once it is deemed safe, the ministry added. (SFC-E)
