VP Lai vows to promote charity work in Taiwan

Vice President Lai Ching-te said Jan. 19 that the government will continue promoting charity initiatives, spotlighting the country’s dedication to improving quality of life for disadvantaged groups.

Volunteers have played a vital role in helping the government upgrade homes, thus creating safe living spaces for low-income households, Lai said during a news conference staged in southern Taiwan’s Chiayi City. One outstanding example is Tainan City-based Doing Good Team, which has provided assistance to more than 100 families across the country’s southern areas, he added.

Volunteer groups countrywide are also pitching in, Lai said, citing as examples Yunlin County-headquartered Formosa Charity Group in western Taiwan and the local Chia Yi Hangshan Tuan. The former engages in building renovations for the underprivileged while the latter constructs public infrastructure.

Lai hopes an increasing number of citizens will engage in public-private endeavors to help those in need, adding that together we can build a brighter future for Taiwan. (YCH-E)
