President Tsai Ing-wen vowed to keep green energy at the heart of Taiwan’s development plans Jan. 21, underscoring the government’s commitment to combating climate change and cementing Taiwan’s position in global supply chains.
 
Tsai said the efforts will help the country meet its goal of generating 20 percent of the country’s electricity via renewable resources by 2025. To this end, Taiwan is ramping up installation of photovoltaic systems countrywide, with the government promoting solar projects on rooftops and fishing ponds in particular, she said.
 
According to Tsai, ensuring a stable supply of green energy will strengthen Taiwan’s international competitiveness as an increasing number of firms worldwide are setting renewable energy requirements for suppliers.
 
Tsai made the remarks while receiving a delegation of solar energy representatives at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

Green energy is an essential component of the six core strategic industries, which were unveiled by President Tsai Ing-wen during her 2020 inauguration and build on the five-plus-two innovative industries program. The other key areas targeted for growth are information and digital technology; cybersecurity; biotech and medical technology; national defense; and strategic stockpile industries. (DL-E)
