Strong support for Taiwan contained in the U.S. Department of State news release issued Jan. 23 is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Beijing is urged to end military, diplomatic and economic pressure against Taiwan and enter into meaningful dialogue, the State Department said. The U.S. stands with friends and allies in advancing shared prosperity, security and values in the Indo-Pacific, as well as the deepening of ties with democratic Taiwan, the State Department added.

This commitment to Taiwan is rock-solid and contributes to the maintenance of peace and stability across the strait and regionally, the State Department said. The U.S. maintains its long-standing commitments as per the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances, and will continue assisting Taiwan in maintaining a sufficient self-defense capability, the State Department added.

Issued three days after the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the release underscores the importance the new U.S. administration places on safeguarding Taiwan’s defense and security, as well as cross-strait peace and stability, the MOFA said.

The government will continue promoting Taiwan-U.S. cooperation and exchanges across the board as part of efforts enhancing relations between the like-minded partners, the ministry added.

In a tweet on the MOFA’s official account, the ministry said “We sincerely thank @StateDept for its rock-solid support of democratic #Taiwan in the face of Beijing’s ongoing coercion. Based on shared values & interests, we’re committed to our partnership with the #US in furthering peace & stability in the #IndoPacific.” (SFC-E)
