Taiwan joined the U.S. Academy for Women Entrepreneurs program run by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs on International Women’s Day March 8, spotlighting the government’s commitment to working with like-minded partners for the advancement of gender equality.
Joining with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the AWE program in Taiwan will recruit 90 women entrepreneurs from around the country and offer them training in areas spanning accounting, management, marketing, product design and sales. Participants will join the global AWE network and ECA’s exchange alumni database upon completing their training.
MOEA Minister Wang Mei-hua, who presided over the launch ceremony, lauded the performance of the country’s businesswomen worldwide. Taiwan’s participation in the program will help cement its reputation as a producer of female leaders and raise the profile of local startups in the international community, she said.
In response, American Institute in Taiwan Director Brent Christensen said Taiwan’s inclusion in the program reflects the two sides’ shared goals to strengthen economic and commercial cooperation and enhance language learning. Taiwan-U.S. relations have never been more vital, and one of the most important aspects in this regard is a shared support of women’s empowerment, he added.
Established in 2019, the AWE program seeks to provide women entrepreneurs with the skills, resources and networks needed to start and scale successful businesses. The most popular sectors represented by AWE participants are education, food, handicrafts, manufacturing and retail. (YCH-E)
