President Tsai reaffirms commitment to boosting industrial innovation

President Tsai Ing-wen promised April 8 to leave no stone unturned in creating a better environment for advancing Taiwan’s R&D capabilities, underscoring the government’s commitment to boosting industrial innovation.

Upgrading industries across the board is key to ensuring the country is ready to capitalize on post-pandemic opportunities, Tsai said. To that end, the government is taking steps to foster a culture of innovation that maintains Taiwan’s competitive edge in global supply chains, she added.

Tsai made the remarks while receiving a delegation of 2020 International Inventor Prize winners at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. Organized by locally headquartered Taiwan International Invention Award Winners Association and Chinese Innovation and Invention Society, the IIP recognizes individuals across ten categories.

According to Tsai, the recipients have all made outstanding contributions toward advancing Taiwan’s innovative credentials. Their efforts are in keeping with the government’s long-term development goals as highlighted by the six core strategic industries initiative, she said.

Unveiled by Tsai during her May 2020 inauguration address, the initiative springboards off the five-plus-two innovative industries program. It comprises the information and digital technology; cybersecurity; biotech and medical technology; national defense; green and renewable energy; and strategic stockpile industries. (DL-E)
