Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu accepted the copy of the credentials of Carlos Jose Fleitas Rodriguez, new ambassador of Paraguay to the ROC (Taiwan), while exchanging views on a variety of issues pertaining to bilateral relations, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs July 8.
Wu, who extended a warm welcome to Fleitas, said he looks forward to working with the South America ally’s ambassador in deepening friendship and expanding exchanges between the two countries. He also took the opportunity to convey the sincere appreciation of the government and people for the staunch support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations shown by Paraguay under President Mario Abdo Benitez.
According to Wu, Paraguay is an important partner of Taiwan, adding that two-way ties are going from strength to strength across a broad spectrum of areas as the two countries celebrate 65 years of diplomatic relations this year.
In response, Fleitas said Taiwan and Paraguay have taken similar paths toward becoming democracies, and share the universal values of freedom, democracy and justice. He vowed to leave no stone unturned in bolstering cooperation between the countries, as well as championing Taiwan’s international participation.
Recipient of a scholarship provided by the government of Taiwan, Fleitas earned a master’s in e-learning from New Taipei City-based Tamkang University. He previously served as minister at Paraguay’s embassy in Taiwan and then as its charge d’affaires during 2010 and 2013. (DL-E)
