United States Vice President Kamala Harris reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait at the 18th East Asia Summit held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on September 7. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also conveyed concern over regional security issues, including in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, during a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) sincerely appreciates and commends the US and Australian leaders for again raising concerns over stability and security across the Taiwan Strait.
Taiwan occupies a pivotal position in the first island chain in the Western Pacific and plays a key and indispensable role in the security and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific. It will continue to work closely with the United States, Australia, and other like-minded democratic partners to counter regional authoritarian regimes, safeguard shared democratic values, and preserve peace and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and throughout the region.
