U.S. support for Taiwan’s inclusion as an observer to the World Health Assembly is welcomed by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said April 9.
 
Brian P. McKeon, deputy secretary of state for management and resources, set out the U.S. stance during a meeting with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, the day before in Washington during discussions on WHO financing and reform priorities, according to the MOFA.
 
The U.S. is a staunch supporter of Taiwan’s participation in the U.N. system, the ministry said, citing a related statement issued in October 2021 by Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Another example is the Taiwan-U.S. Working Group Meeting on International Organizations staged March 31 in Washington for consultation on expanding the country’s global participation, the MOFA added.
 
As a force for good and responsible member of the international community, Taiwan is committed to promoting progress on global issues, especially challenges posed by COVID-19, the ministry said. The government will continue working with the U.S. and other like-minded partners in addressing threats to public health while safeguarding the shared values of freedom, democracy and international rules-based order, the MOFA added.
