Facilities catering for the needs of physically and mentally challenged groups will receive all requisite support as part of government efforts to continue building Taiwan into one of the most caring and inclusive countries in the world, according to Vice President Lai Ching-te Oct. 21.

Case in point is organizations like Taiwan Association for Visually Impaired People, Lai said. Its good work benefits the community as a whole and enables more members of society to make a worthwhile contribution, he added.

Lai made the remarks while touring TAVIP’s Love and Happiness Sheltered Workshop in Taipei City. During the visit, he joined members of the workshop in making soap—the main skill taught at the facility.

According to Lai, soap is one of the most important essential items in combating coronavirus. It is important to raise public awareness of the contributions made by groups such as TAVIP in safeguarding the health and well-being of the people, he said.

Lai also took the opportunity to praise the workshop for leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the physically and mentally challenged can live independent and satisfying lives, adding that this important process starts with boosting self-confidence and esteem.

Established in 2016 with the backing of Taipei City Government, the workshop cares for 22 individuals experiencing a variety of physical and mental disorders, as well as visual, hearing and language impairments. (YCH-E)
