Taiwan and Somaliland concluded a medical cooperation agreement June 16, underscoring a shared commitment to promoting the health and well-being of the people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
 
Signed by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu in Taipei City and Liban Yusuf Osman, acting minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation, in Hargeisa, the pact paves the way for Taiwan teams to provide medical services and train personnel in Somaliland.
 
Wu said health care is one of the cornerstones of successful bilateral cooperation. The agreement is set to play a key role in expanding the breadth and depth of friendship and exchanges between Taiwan and Somaliland, he added.
 
Drawing upon Taiwan’s extensive experiences in implementing humanitarian projects around the world, Wu said, the pact will enable Somaliland to enhance the capacity and quality of medical treatment in the Horn of Africa.
 
According to the MOFA, the Taiwan-Somaliland partnership is going from strength to strength since the two sides established respective representative offices in August 2020. A raft of ongoing projects supported by the government is proceeding as planned in areas spanning agriculture, education, information and communication technology and public health, the ministry added.
 
Taiwan’s private sector is also playing its part, the MOFA said, citing large-scale donations of health care items, medical devices and pandemic-combating supplies reaching thousands of individuals in Somaliland.
 
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Minister Wu & @DeputyLiban, acting minister of @somalilandmfa, inked the #Taiwan-#Somaliland Medical Cooperation Agreement. The pact, an example of the #TaiwanModel in action, enables our #HornOfAfrica friend & partner to boost health care services capacity benefiting the people.” (SFC-E)
