A donation of US$3.5 million for Ukrainian refugees in Poland was made by the government March 7 as part of ongoing efforts demonstrating Taiwan Can Help the global family of nations in a time of need, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The funds were handed over by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu to Anatolii Bakurov, representative of the Ukraine community in Taiwan, during a ceremony attended by Tsai Chi-chang, vice president of the Legislative Yuan; Cyryl Kozaczewski, director of the Polish Office in Taipei; Filip Grzegorzewski, head of the European Economic and Trade Office; and business representatives and Ukraine expatriates in Taiwan.

This gesture is a tribute to Ukraine’s courageous resistance, Wu said, adding that facing similar threats from authoritarian expansion, Taiwan stands with Ukraine in such difficult times.

As a democracy and responsible member of the international community, Wu said. Taiwan strongly condemns Russia’s invasion and attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territory, he added.

In response, Bakurov expressed his deepest gratitude to the people of Taiwan. All assistance counts at this critical juncture, and Ukraine will fight to the end, he said.

The donation follows the establishment of a fund March 2 to help those fleeing the conflict in the Eastern European country, the MOFA said. To date, nearly NT$300 million (US$11 million) has been raised, with further funds earmarked for refugees in Slovakia, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “#Ukraine’s brave resistance to #Russia’s invasion has moved #Taiwan’s people to #StandWithUkraine. Minister Wu showed the strength of this sentiment with a donation of US$3.5M+ on behalf of the government for Ukrainian refugees in #Poland. The gesture is proof! #TaiwanCanHelp” (YCH-E)
