Taiwan’s China Steel Corporation was among nine companies recognized as 2019 Steel Sustainability Champions by Belgium-headquartered World Steel Association June 1, spotlighting efforts by one of the country’s largest enterprises to embrace green business practices.
 
Based in southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City, CSC converts excess heat generated in the process of steel making into steam, which is then piped to nearby plants for use in their production processes. In 2019, its steam sales to neighboring businesses such as petrochemical, construction, civil engineering and electrical enterprises reached 1.54 million metric tons, equivalent to 4.68 million gigajoules of energy.
 
CSC has also made strides in water reuse, achieving a recovery ratio as high as 98.4% last year and saving 3.82 million metric tons of water compared with 2018. These efforts are matched by across the board decreases in emissions, including a yearly carbon dioxide reduction of 6,599 metric tons.
 
In line with government policy, CSC has invested heavily in green energy, constructing solar power plants at its locations in central and southern Taiwan. With a total capacity of more than 80 megawatts, these produce enough electricity to power 28,000 households.
 
Founded in 1967 as the International Iron and Steel Institute, the World Steel Association is a nonprofit organization with members including steel enterprises, industry associations and research institutes. The Steel Sustainability Champions award is an industry-wide program designed to encourage steel companies to set higher standards and make further progress toward sustainable development. (TYT-E)
