President Tsai Ing-wen said March 6 that the government is working to narrow the gender gap in Taiwan and create conditions in which women from all walks of life can break glass ceilings in achieving professional and personal goals.

More and more women in Taiwan are holding down jobs in areas once considered strictly the domain of men such as the armed forces, police and front-line health care services, Tsai said. An increasing number of women are also making greater contributions to the country’s development by excelling in fields like business, politics, science and sports, she added.

Tsai made the remarks via video during a run-up event to March 8 International Women’s Day staged by the Ministry of Health and Welfare at Syntrend Creative Park in Taipei City.

According to Tsai, the government is leaving no stone unturned in advancing gender equality policies enabling all people to make full and lasting contributions to society. It is sincerely hoped that in the not-too-distant future, the phrase successful woman will be as commonplace as successful men, she said.

The event, organized with respect to U.N. Women’s IWD theme of Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID-19 World, is part of a series of activities promoting gender equality hosted by the MOHW annually since 2004. This year’s edition spotlights the challenges and developmental needs of women in Taiwan at various stages of life.
