An exhibition celebrating Taiwan’s achievements in expanding global participation was staged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oct. 22 at historic Taipei Guest House in the capital.

Themed “Stronger Together–2022 International Organizations Day,” the one-day event was the first of its kind organized by the MOFA and involved more than 20 government agencies, entities and organizations.

According to the MOFA, the exhibition showcased public and private sector campaigns for Taiwan’s global participation throughout the years, the country’s involvement in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and positive developments of global organizations at home and abroad.

The event also highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to advancing the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, as demonstrated by the release of its second Voluntary National Review on the implementation of the SDGs earlier this year, the ministry added.

High-profile participants included members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from three intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and Marco Wopereis, director-general of Tainan City-headquartered World Vegetable Center in southern Taiwan.

During his opening remarks, MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said Taiwan is a democratic success story and reliable partner willing and able to contribute to the global community.

While Taiwan is an active participant in 69 IGOs, the country remains isolated from the United Nations and its specialized agencies including the World Health Organization and International Civil Aviation Organization, he added.

The minister said such exclusion has prevented Taiwan from joining efforts to address pressing challenges around the world. He also thanked friends of Taiwan to continue supporting the country’s global participation.

Echoing Wu’s remarks, Nauru Ambassador to the ROC (Taiwan) Jarden Kephas said Taiwan plays an important role in promoting global peace and progress and continues to make valuable contributions to the international community. Countries around the world are increasing their support for Taiwan because they recognize the value of Taiwan as a friend and partner, he added.

Wopereis said it takes international cooperation to build a more resilient society and tackle challenges such as climate change, food security and malnutrition. The theme of the event is perfectly in line with this stance, he said, adding that WorldVeg will continue to help Taiwan share its expertise for the benefit of the global society. (SFC-E)
