President Tsai Ing-wen lauded the achievements of Team Taiwan’s delegation to the 2022 WorldSkills Competition during a special event at the Presidential Office in Taipei City Dec. 12, spotlighting the government’s commitment to cultivating professional excellence.

Team Taiwan achieved impressive results at the recently concluded WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition, Tsai said. Its success is a tribute to the tireless efforts of all involved and has helped raise the country’s profile on the global stage, she added.

Tsai made the remarks during a meeting with over 50 competition participants, coaches and support staff.

According to Tsai, Taiwan will host the third WorldSkills Asia Competition in 2025. Such events are expected to expand professional exchanges and experience sharing to bring creative solutions to global challenges while boosting the country’s development, she added.

During a ceremony held to commend the delegation the same day, Premier Su Tseng-chang said the government will keep up the momentum during the second phase of the Higher Education Sprout Project. Implemented from 2018 to 2022, the project’s first phase provided financial support for vocational schools to develop innovative courses meeting industry needs.

The initiative brought together the Ministries of Education, Labor and Economic Affairs to provide additional specialized equipment and training venues, Su said, adding that the MOL also raised the reward amount for winners of global skills competitions.

Taking part in the event held Sept. 7 to Nov. 26 in 15 countries and territories, Team Taiwan won a record number of awards, bagging six gold, 13 silver and six bronze medals, as well as 17 medallions for excellence. Their strong performance ranked them third out of 57 competitors. (YCH-E)
